THE KING: Eternal Monarch (2020) is one of the best South Korean dramas directed by Sang-Hoon, Yoo Je Won, and Jung Ji Hyun, and written by Kim Eun-sook. Mystery, Romance, and Drama are some of the genres represented in the 16-episode series. The IMDb rating for THE KING: Eternal Monarch (Korean Drama) is 8.3/10. The most anticipated series of 2020, here’s my two cents on this unparalleled series that will melt your hearts away.
Story Line:
“The King: Eternal Monarch” is based on two parallel worlds, one of the Kingdom of Corea and the other of the Republic of Korea. Two persons of the same face exist each in one world. Lee Gon is the emperor of Corea loved and admired by all his subjects but he never wishes for the throne. When he was eight, he witnessed the heart-wrenching assassination of his father and the former king by his half-uncle Lee Lim but was saved by a mysterious man Lee Gon managed to get hold of a police badge from the man with name Jeong Tae-Eul. Twenty-five years later, while chasing a mysterious figure in the forest, he enters the parallel world of the Republic of Korea where he encounters our female lead Jeong Tae-Eul who happens to be a high-ranked police officer. They both teams up and together fight criminals as well as work for closing the access between the two worlds.
Cast and Acting:
Lee
Min-ho (Lee Gon / Lee Ji-Hun) melted our
hearts away with his gorgeous looks, balanced personality, and ultimate acting. Kim
Go-Eun (Jeong Tae-Eul / Luna) is a high-ranked police officer in the Republic
of Korea a post which fits her badass and loud-mouthed personality though there
is little change in her personality as Luna, a criminal in Corea. I do feel she
could have performed her role better. Woo Doo-Hwan (Jo Yeong / Jo Eun-sup)
as Jo Yeong was the Captain of Royal Guards in Corea and childhood best friend
of Lee Gon. In Korea, he is an independent and joyous Eun-sup serving as a
guard for the National Police Agency. He played his role with utmost dedication.
When everyone would fail to attract you to watch it, he would be the one to
steal your heart. Kim Kyung-Nam (Kang Shin-Jae / Kang Hyun-min) originally
Hyun-min was from Corea but lives under the guise of Shin-Jae a detective in
Violent Crimes Squad Three. He has a crush on Tae-Eul. The real Shin-Jae was
sick in his enduring
childhood so he remained hidden from the real world. Lee Jung-Jin (Lee Lim /
Lee Seung-Jae) was the half-uncle of Lee Gon who wishes to obtain the mystical
Manpasikjeok which will give him eternity and immense power. When Lee Gon
breaks it into two, he escapes with one halk to Korea and is now looking for
the other one. I guess after Do-Hwan, he performed his role with utmost
determination and dedication. Jung Eun-Chae (Koo Seo-Seung / Koo
Eun-ah) Seo-Seung is an independent, elegant and ambitious lady from Corea who
becomes the first female Prime Minister. She was from a broken family and is
quite a greedy person. She wants to become the next queen of the kingdom of
Corea. Eun-Chae proved to be the best
choice for this role and her dialogue delivery and body language were the best
the whole time.
Final Thoughts:
The show starts overall the show is worth your time but as it progresses the product promotion becomes ridiculous and it becomes more of an advertisement rather than a series. In my opinion, all the characters had done a great job in acting but there was little character development sometimes the chemistry between the male leads becomes fake and needed improvement. Sometimes she was too strong and at times became the damsel in distress. The show had splendid cinematography and direction and the flaws in script-writing were covered. The doppelgangers and the concept of two worlds along with time-travelling come extremely confusing and you need to watch the show with full concentration. This show is something either you will enjoy or hate, there’s no in-between.
Very Impressive
